Fascinating expose in the Times today about the validity of the smash book The Tell by Amy Griffin.
Griffin used Molly (MDMA) and ecstasy to unearth buried memories of systematic rape by an Amarillo middle school teacher in the 1980s. The drugs were taken in a therapeutic setting.
To say the book is a hit is an understatement of epic proportions. Oprah, Reese, Gwyneth, Martha Stewart and Hoda Kotb lined up to promote it. An Amazon Editor’s Pick, The Tell has 5,500 glowing reviews on its Amazon page.
Now fellow students are questioning the events detailed by Ms. Griffin in her book. Though Griffin used a pseudonym for him, classmates were able to identify the teacher through the author’s descriptions. He’d worked at the school for 30 years.
Griffin, who is wealthy with family money and married to a man who ran $9 billion hedge fund, also invests with her husband in the company that sells the MDMA-assisted therapy.
Buried in the piece, however, is the book was ghostwritten. Griffin hired Sam Lansky, a memoirist and novelist, who ghosted Britney Spears memoir.
